Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy at Suburban Foot & Ankle uses controlled freezing to destroy plantar warts, skin lesions, and other abnormal tissue on the foot. Our Elmhurst and Bloomingdale podiatrists apply liquid nitrogen or similar cryogenic agents directly to the lesion, providing an effective, well-established treatment with minimal scarring.
Benefits
- Highly effective destruction of plantar warts and benign skin lesions
- Quick in-office treatment — typically just a few minutes per session
- Minimal scarring compared to excisional surgery
- No stitches or complex wound care required
- Can be repeated if necessary for stubborn or recurrent warts
- Safe for most patients including children and adolescents
What to Expect
Your podiatrist identifies and prepares the lesion, then applies a cryogenic agent such as liquid nitrogen using a spray device or cotton-tipped applicator. The freezing creates a controlled blister that lifts the abnormal tissue away from healthy skin over the following days. Mild discomfort and blistering are normal. Multiple sessions may be needed for larger or deeper warts.
When Is This Treatment Recommended?
Cryotherapy is recommended for plantar warts that are painful or spreading, warts that have not responded to over-the-counter treatments, and benign skin lesions on the foot that require removal.
